Learn about the founder of the GAA, Michael Cusack, born in 1847. Michael Cusack Centre, located in his home village of Carran, in the centre of the Burren, County Clare, opened in 2006 to coincide with the centenary of his death.
The Michael Cusack Centre, situated in the heart of the Burren in County Clare, is a treasure chest of living history. He has gone down in Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) history as the man who lit the torch that led to the founding of the GAA in 1884. Today, the GAA is the largest amateur sporting organisation in the world.The Centre commemorates the life and memory of Michael Cusack and the national sporting association he founded. Take a guided tour or watch a revolutionary new multimedia presentation, the first of its kind in Ireland, in the original homestead of the GAA founder.This presentation features unique holographic projections of Michael Cusack who greets visitors to this 19th century Burren cottage. This unique multimedia facility greatly enhances the visitor experience by giving an insight into Cusack’s life and the development of the GAA at a difficult time in Irish history.Visitors are also provided with a map and information to facilitate a self guided tour of the Centre. Information panels and photographs line the main exhibition room walls and audio visual presentations also recount the evocative story of Cusack and the GAA. A glass wall in the exhibition room offers a stunning view of the humble 19th century herdsman’s home and the surrounding Burren landscape.
