Lifford Old Courthouse

Lifford Old Courthouse is home to a popular visitor centre in the town of Lifford, the historic capital of County Donegal. The Old Courthouse was built in 1746 and offers live tours which transport you back in time to where you can see and hear what it was like in Donegal’s original county jail.
If you are interested in learning about the history of law and disorder in Donegal during the past, then the guided jail tour of Lifford Old Courthouse is the perfect way to do it. To begin your visit of the historic cells you are charged, sentenced, fingerprinted and shown your new surroundings. Visitors can accept the challenge to escape from one of the historic dungeon cells deep beneath the courtroom by attempting ‘jailbreak’, Donegal’s first escape room game. Younger prisoners are also able to hone their escape skills by taking part in the family friendly junior ‘jailbreak’, a 30 minute game that will get kids thinking outside the box as they attempt to break free from the cell. You won’t just be told about the cramped conditions, the painful punishments and the disgusting diet, you will get to experience them for yourself. Fun and informative, this is a guided tour with a difference and perfect for all ages. When you have served your time behind bars, sneak upstairs to The Courthouse Bistro, where you will be served something much more pleasant, with freshly made dishes serving everything from light snacks and main courses to delicious daily specials and homemade treats.
